FORT COLLINS - Neenan Co. received Fort Collins' first LEED Existing Building Silver certification for its office on East Prospect Road.

The firm has worked for the past three years to implement the improvements necessary to earn the designation. The certification, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute, required the implementation of improvements for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. New features include:

• Sustainable landscape procedures;
• Modified bike rack for internal storage;
• Two new low emission/high efficiency carpool vehicles;
• Lighting upgrades and timer installations;
• Purchase of wind power;
• Recycling program handling 87 percent of total waste;
• Sustainable cleaning products;
• Composting.

"We are proud to be the first existing building in Fort Collins to earn the LEED EB Silver certification," said Neenan President Randy Myers, in an announcement. "As a commercial design and construction firm, The Neenan Company has a responsibility to show the community what is possible for reducing environmental impact through the built environment."

Other LEED EB projects in Northern Colorado include the new Seven Generations building in Fort Collins, which received the basic certification, and Porter Industries in Loveland, which received LEED EB Gold certification.
