The 2006-07 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, produced by Academic Analytics of Stony Brook, N.Y., takes into account the number of publications, federal grant dollars awarded and honors and awards received by various departments. The index reviewed 7,400 programs in 172 disciplines at 375 institutions.
CSU announced its six departments that were in the top 10:
- The Department of Atmospheric Science in the College of Engineering ranked No. 2 in the atmospheric sciences and meteorology category, behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture in the College of Agricultural Sciences ranked No. 3 in the architecture, planning and design, various category
- The Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management in the College of Agricultural Sciences ranked No. 5 in the agricultural sciences, various category
- The Department of Biology in the College of Natural Sciences ranked No. 5 in the botany and zoology category
- The Department of Forest, Rangeland and Watershed Stewardship in the Warner College of Natural Resources ranked No. 6 in the forestry category
- The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology in the Warner College of Natural Resources ranked No. 8 in the fisheries science category
UNC also made an appearance on the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. The school had three departments ranked in the top 10:
- No. 8 for its biological education program in the science education discipline
- No. 10 for its chemistry education program, also in the science education discipline
- No. 10 for its mathematical education program in the mathematics education discipline
