Mayor Chad Auer promotes CML “If I Were Mayor” contest
Students will learn why municipal government is important, discover their leaders, find out how towns are funded and express through an essay how they would describe the services offered in the town they live.
Students are asked to write an essay on the set topic: “During a recent council meeting a resident raises her hand and asks why citizens should care about local government. She doesn’t think city/town services have any impact on the quality of her life or the lives of her two youth children. If you were mayor, how would you respond?”
Essays will be judged on their relation to the topic, creativity, displayed knowledge about the role of a mayor, and legibility and proper use of grammar. Winners will be notified by May 3, 2012. Four winners will receive certificates of achievement, $500 to establish a scholarship account with CollegeInvest and the opportunity to attend the 90th CML Annual Conference to receive their awards and present their essays during the Elected Officials Luncheon on June 22, 2012.
All entries should be submitted by teachers using the application and form found on the Town of Firestone website at http://www.ci.firestone.co.us/HomePages/readmoreMayorContest.html. Questions regarding the contest should be directed to Lisa White with CML by calling 303-831-6411 or emailing email@example.com.
