Mass layoffs fell 54 percent in January
Mass layoffs in Colorado peaked in December 2009 at 24, according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report also showed that the number of initial claimants for unemployment insurance in Colorado fell from 1,126 in January 2011 to 556 in January.
Nationally, mass layoffs decreased 33 percent from 2,558 to 1,705 year-over-year in January, and new claims for unemployment insurance decreased 42 percent in the same period.
Monthly mass layoff numbers are collected from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance filed during a five-week period.
