Spirit starts service out of DIA
To mark the new service, Spirit was offering $28.79 fares (one-way), which is a $9 base fare plus taxes and fees, available Thursday and Friday at www.spirit.com.
“We are pleased to welcome Spirit Airlines to Denver,” Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock said in a news release. “This is great news for the city and region because new air service generates economic activity.”
Spirit Airlines is based in Florida. Its fleet operates more than 190 daily flights to more than 50 destinations within the U.S., Latin America and Caribbean.
The airline last flew out of Denver nearly a decade ago. It is known for fares as low as $9, but also for charging fees that other airlines don't including $30 to $40 for a carry-on bag.
The airline is also known for its sometimes-controversial advertisements. It recently was forced to pull an ad for flights to Colombia that said, "More Bang for Your Buck. Flights to Cartagena and other destinations." The ad, a play off the Secret Service prostitution scandal, included four women in bikinis and a man wearing sunglasses and an earpiece.
