Bohemian Foundation is opening registration for its Bridges out of Poverty Northern Colorado 2012 trainings. The first workshops will be offered May 17 and 18 and will feature Scott Miller and Jodi Pfarr, two nationally renowned speakers on poverty alleviation. The workshops are free but registration is required.
Registration for the Larimer Humane Society’s 22nd annual Fire Hydrant 5, 5k Walk/Run and Pet Expo is now open. The Fire Hydrant 5 is the community’s largest outdoor fundraiser for homeless pets in Colorado. Proceeds will directly benefit the nearly 12,000 lost, stray, orphaned and injured domestic and wild animals the LHS cares for each year. Registration is online at www.larimerhuman.org or at the LHS administrative office.
More than 20 members of the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado volunteered their time to help complete the Gardens at PVH, therapeutic healing gardens under construction at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. The landscape professionals undertook the project in honor of Earth Day.
More than 360 community members gathered in March to show their support at the Project Self-Sufficiency community breakfast in Fort Collins. Attendees enjoyed a breakfast presentation and collectively donated or pledged more than $84,000 to help PS-S end the cycle of poverty in Larimer County.
Dr. Shawn Murray of Murray Orthodontics presented the with a $2,600 check and two barrels full of non-perishable goods. The money was collected during his Spring Food Drive special.
Numerica Corp., a research and development leader in target tracking, data fusion and resource management, won a two-year, $1 million Small Business Innovation Research Phase II contract from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to develop a resource optimization solution for battle management. Numerica’s algorithm can enhance a military operator’s ability to make better, more rapid engagement decisions during a ballistic missile raid. The principal investigator for the contract is Numerica Research Scientist Scott Miller, Ph.D.
The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Front Range Internet Inc. as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business. With the announcement of the 67 new BFBs, FRII joins the group of more than 400 local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the U.S. FRII will now have access to a variety of free tools from the league to continue to improve its bike-friendliness.

HomeGoods, an off-price home fashions store, will open a new location in Fort Collins this month. The 25,000-square-foot store is located at in Harmony Marketplace, and will offer home fashions at 20 to 60 percent less than department store prices. The first 400 shoppers at the grand opening May 6 will receive a free, reusable HomeGoods shopping bag (while supplies last).

Music in our Schools: A Student Showcase will host for the second time Poudre School District jazz and chamber orchestra groups for a day of free concerts in Old Town Square and Oak Street Plaza May 5. The event will last from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and conclude with a special performance by the Colorado State University jazz performance group. Audiences are encouraged to bring their old instruments to donate to a student in need as part of the Instrument Donation Program.
