Governor bans private use of fireworks

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an order Thursday banning the private use of fireworks statewide, citing a high fire danger related to dry conditions.

At least 44 of the state's 64 counties are listed as having "high," "very high" or "extreme" wildfire danger, according to the governor's office. More than 340 wildfires have been reported statewide this year.

"This ban is a necessary step to help protect people, property and the beautiful state we live in," Hickenlooper said in a statement issued by his office.

Commercial, professional and municipal fireworks displays are allowed as long as a county sheriff approves in writing.

The executive order also bans outdoor fires such as campfires and charcoal grill fires.

The ban does not apply to fires in constructed, permanent fire pits or fire grates within developed camp and picnic grounds; liquid- or gas-fueled stoves; indoor fireplaces; charcoal grills at private residences or controlled burns.

County officials may adopt more restrictive bans, the governor's office said.
