The City of Fort Collins wants to talk to urban dwellers with green thumbs.

The point of the conversation? To address the question of regulations regarding community gardening, urban farming and other types of agriculture activities within city limits.

Some streamlining of existing regulations might come out of it. At the moment, anyone wanting to till the land on their property would be subjected to review in all but four of the city zone districts.

In addition, the City Land Use Code does not define these more urban forms of agricultural activities.

"Our goal is to make changes which reflect the desires of the whole community regarding urban agriculture," Lindsay Ex, the city's environmental planner, said. "In other words, we want to acknowledge the citizens practicing newer types of agriculture, but we also want to make sure these practices are compatible with our neighborhoods."
The city said it will work with the community to explore allowable uses with the idea of proposing any recommended changes to the code for City Council review this December.

In the meantime, the city has established an online questionnaire at fcgov.com/urbanagriculture that will remain live until the end of September.
