The City of Fort Collins has outlined some "emerging design concepts" for the Midtown area including the notion of creating a promenade for pedestrians and bicyclists adjacent to the MAX bus line.

The concepts — to be address at a City Council work session Jan. 8 — were based on feedback from the public and from various stakeholders.

Along with the promenade, they include establishing three "character areas," creating an "urban environment" through site, building and streetscape design, adding outdoor space for people to rest and play, encouraging structure parking, and adding public art to distinguish "gateways" and key intersections.

The city completed a community survey that found that 91 percent of respondents visit Midtown daily or weekly, and the 84.5 percent of visitors go there to shop.

Written responses in the surveys indicated that the area needs safety upgrades for bicyclists and pedestrians crossing College Avenue.

Respondents also suggested increasing density in the Midtown area by constructing taller buildings.

Midtown Fort Collins includes the commercial area from Prospect to Harmony roads, from College Avenue to the Mason Corridor, and the Foothills Mall area.
