PVH tops with patients, too
FORT COLLINS - Poudre Valley Hospital is among the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient satisfaction, according to a new HealthGrades survey.

Fort Collins' PVH was the only hospital in Larimer or Weld counties to receive the Outstanding Patient Experience award from HealthGrades. Other Colorado hospitals awarded are Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette; Longmont United Hospital; Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, and Valley View Hospital Association in Glenwood Springs.

HealthGrades used the results of satisfaction surveys that hospital patients completed as part of a new federal initiative to increase public reporting of hospital performance. The survey covered 27 questions relating to physician and nurse communication, responsiveness, hospital cleanliness and noise levels, medication information and post- discharge care instructions.

The Golden-based health-care ratings firm analyzed results for 2,592 hospitals nationwide and included the top 15 percent of hospitals in its awards.
Caution: Recession ahead for Colorado
Recession is in the cards for Colorado during 2009 with the state slated to lose about 4,000 jobs, according to economist Richard Wobbekind of the University of Colorado's Leeds School of Business.

Colorado has only experienced a year of job losses three times this decade and only seven times since 1939, when such data began to be recorded. The Leeds School of Business and BBVA Compass Bank hosted the 44th annual Business Economic Outlook Forum in Denver on Dec. 8.

"The national economy is in a recession and we don't know how long it is going to last or how deep it is going to go," Wobbekind said, in a prepared statement. "That fact is very unsettling to the person on the street and has dramatically affected consumer and business confidence."

The Colorado economy will be greatly impacted in the next year by low consumer confidence along with the credit and housing crises. Wobbekind indicated that this recession is the worst overall that he has seen since he started the Economic Outlook Forum in the late 1980s, although Colorado saw a more direct impact from the 1987-88 and 2002-03 recessions.

"We're just starting to go into negative territory in Colorado, so the question is when does it end?" Wobbekind said.

The forecast calls for unemployment in Colorado to rise from 5.5 percent at the end of this year to 6.5 percent by the end of 2009. Employment gains are anticipated in natural resources and mining, education and health services, and government.

The construction sector is expected to lead losses in Colorado next year shedding about 11,200 jobs. Losses are also anticipated in the manufacturing sector and the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which includes retail.
A-B InBev to trim 1,400 jobs by year end
ST. LOUIS - Anheuser-Busch InBev announced Monday plans to cut about 6 percent of its U.S. workforce.

The company said the cuts are related to its previously announced plans for integrating Anheuser-Busch Inc. into the multinational corporation. Belgium-based InBev closed its $52 billion purchase of A-B in November.

The job cuts will amount to about 1,400 salaried workers -- 75 percent of which are based at A-B's St. Louis headquarters. Other positions will be eliminated "in field and brewery locations," according to the announcement. Most of the cuts will be made by the end of this year.

The cuts are in addition to the 1,000 positions eliminated by workers taking a voluntary enhanced retirement. In addition, the company will not fill 250 open positions and eliminate 415 contractor positions. A-B's Fort Collins brewery opened in 1988 and employs about 700 workers.
