Nominate a Woman of Influence
FORT COLLINS - The closing date for nominations for the 2009 Northern Colorado Women of Influence Awards is June 15. The awards will be given to 10 women (or nine women and one man) for their achievements in business, philanthropic and government organizations. Honorees will be recognized at a breakfast event to be held Aug. 13 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland.
Profiles of the award winners will be published in the Aug. 14 issue of the Northern Colorado Business Report.
Categories for which women who are committed to our community and who exemplify the best of success may be nominated include banking and finance; business and professional services; real estate, construction and development; health and education; government, energy and utilities; technology and manufacturing; nonprofit agencies (employed in); volunteerism, and hospitality and tourism. The final category is for the individual -- woman or man -- who has been an outstanding mentor to a woman.
To be eligible candidates for the Northern Colorado Women of Influence awards must live and work in Northern Colorado. A candidate may be nominated for only one award.
A panel of five judges from Northern Colorado will evaluate the nominations and make recommendations to the Business Report for finalists and award winners.
Anyone in the Northern Colorado area may nominate a candidate and may nominate more than one person in any of the 10 categories.

United Way raises more funds than last year
LARIMER COUNTY - United Way of Larimer County raised $6 million in its annual campaign up from $5.7 million last year.
The fiscal year 2008-09 campaign saw 8,000 donations in the form of individual giving, corporate gifts, workplace fundraising efforts and leveraged dollars and grants. Gifts from individuals and workplace campaigns totaled $5.7 million this year -- up 6.6 percent from last year.
"We are so proud to be part of a community that steps up to help out when so many in Larimer County are suffering in these tough economic times," said Gordan Thibedeau, president and CEO of United Way of Larimer County, in a prepared statement.
United Way will direct the funds to help the local community through assistance for basic and emergency needs; providing opportunities for people in need to improve their lives; and supporting "United Way in Action" programs such as United Way 2-1-1, WomenGive, Compass and the Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center for Hope. |

Greeley's April unemployment highest in state
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Greeley recorded the highest unemployment rate for Colorado's metropolitan areas in April, according the latest data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Greeley metro area, which encompasses much of Weld County, had an unemployment rate of 8.1 percent for April -- the highest among the seven metropolitan statistical areas in the state. Pueblo also saw an 8.1 percent unemployment rate, while Colorado's overall rate was 7.3 percent.
Greeley's unemployment was down from March, however, when the rate was 8.6 percent. In April 2008, the rate was 4.5 percent.
The Fort Collins-Loveland metro area had the second lowest unemployment rate in April at 6.1 percent. The rate is down from 6.7 percent in March but up from 3.7 percent in April 2008. The Boulder MSA reported the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 5.7 percent. Other unemployment rates were:
- Colorado Springs -- 7.7 percent
- Denver-Aurora-Broomfield -- 7.5 percent
- Grand Junction -- 8 percent
April unemployment rates were higher than the previous year in all 372 metro areas tracked by the BLS. It was the fourth consecutive month that every MSA saw a year-over-year increase. Thirteen areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15 percent, and 31 areas registered rates below 5 percent.
The national unemployment rate in April was 8.6 percent -- up from 4.8 percent last year. |

Bohemian announces Pharos Fund awards
FORT COLLINS - The Fort Collins-based Bohemian Foundation has announced it is providing more than $420,000 in grants to 31 local nonprofit organizations through its latest round of Pharos Fund Awards.
Fund recipients for 2009 are:

- Food Bank for Larimer County
- Project Self-Sufficiency
- Six programs in Poudre School District schools
- The Book Trust
- Colorado Children's Campaign
- Discovery Science Center
- Partners Mentoring Youth
- Four Colorado State University programs
- Poudre School District Foundation
- Colorado Blues Society
- Fort Collins Museum Foundation
- Junior Achievement of Rocky Mountains
- Lutheran Family Services of Colorado
- United Way of Larimer County
- HalfMoon Arts
- Children's Speech and Reading Center
- Girl Scouts of Colorado
- Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association
- Bas Bleu Theatre
- Fort Collins Baseball Club
- Laramie River Valley Rendezvous
- Friends of the Fort Collins Bicycle Program
Specific amounts of the awards were not disclosed. The grants are awarded to encourage and enable youth to become productive members of society and serve as a catalyst for public awareness. Since its inception in 2002, the Bohemian Foundation Pharos Fund has awarded nearly $8.5 million to nonprofit agencies in the Fort Collins area.

New Belgium manager joins Pinnacol board
FORT COLLINS - Paul Pettinger, quality manager at New Belgium Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, has been appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter to a five-year term on Pinnacol Assurance's nine-member board of directors.
Pettinger has more than 25 years of business and quality improvement experience and holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University. He currently is a member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists' board of directors.
"We were extremely pleased to hear of Governor Ritter's appointment of Paul to our board," said Ken Ross, Pinnacol Assurance president and CEO. "Paul's strong management expertise and analytical skills will only add to the capabilities and resources of this esteemed group of individuals."
Pinnacol Assurance is a quasi-state agency that provides workers' compensation insurance to Colorado employers. |

Riesberg named Legislator of Year by surgery group
GREELEY - State Rep. Jim Riesberg, D-Greeley, has been named Legislator of the Year by the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.
Riesberg was honored for his dedication and service to patient safety and for his sponsorship of House Bill 1025, which was adopted by the legislature this past session and focuses on criteria for hospital infection rate reports. Gov. Bill Ritter signed the bill into law in Greeley on Monday.
"We were heartened to have you as a sponsor of House Bill 1025 covering infection control certification procedures, which allow surgery centers to continue to maintain high standards in infection control reporting," the CASCA said in presenting the award to Riesberg at its annual educational conference on May 21. |
